The cook’s chair (with a cushion on top) is still a dining chair in our house, although sometimes it’s a play kitchen – with play pans and utensils, wooden spoons and so on, previously owned. The pinnies (reversible, for longer spells in between washes), oven glove and tea towel are hand-made.

It is a space-saver and an example of multi-functionality, one way of having less stuff. I find that my children follow particular play scenarios in phases, so practically it is good to have things that don’t use up a permanent space.

I like playthings that are suggestive rather than complete as there is more space for the child’s imagination to meet with them. Louis liked the hooks for hanging things and the oven glove the best.

Thanks to the lovely Joanna of Blackbird Alley for the gift of the Thomas fabric.
